Community Organisations

Glebe Society
The Glebe Society was formed in March 1969 to fight several proposals at the time to destroy certain heritage buildings in the area and the building of freeways through the suburb. The Glebe Society, led by the eminent art historian from the University of Sydney, Professor Bernard Smith, and his wife, the late Kate (Challis) Smith successfully opposed these threats. In 1970 the Glebe Society prepared a Master Plan for the area which resulted in the National Trust's listing of Glebe as a Conservation Area in 1974 with the Heritage Council of NSW. The Glebe Society has since been instrumental in achieving other significant successes including the creation of two parks at Glebe Point, support for the acquisition and extensions to Benledi for the Glebe Branch Library, and the campaign to establish the Metro Light Rail system from Central through Glebe to Lilyfield and its future extension to Circular Quay and Leichhardt.

Their aims include:
- the conservation of our Victorian and Edwardian heritage
- ensuring progress is based on best-outcomes and is resident-friendly
- providing the community with input into decisions which affect them
- the enhancement of community spirit
- working cooperatively with other local organisations

Glebe Chamber of Commerce
The Glebe Chamber of Commerce aims to develop and assist business in the Glebe community. As well as organising the annual Glebe Street Fair and hosting Annual Business awards, initiatives currently run to bring more visitors and customers to Glebe include: working with Tourism NSW and Council to promote Glebe as a destination for tourists and visitors to Sydney; cooperating with the Friends of Benledi to organise The Glebe Book Fair; and the annual event Glebe Week.

The Blackwattle Cove Coalition
The Blackwattle Cove Coalition was established in 2005 from the communities of Glebe, Pyrmont and Ultimo to collaborate on matters of joint interest, with priorities to achieve:
-Development of an integrated planning regime involving relevant State and local government authorities
-Community access to the Blackwattle Bay foreshores
-Integration of the portions of Wentworth Park presently administered separately by the City of Sydney and the Wentworth- Sporting Park Complex Trust
-Safe access to Wentworth Park and the development of community recreation facilities in the park
The Blackwattle Cove Coalition organised the
Wentworth Park Celebration Day on 18 May 2008. The 2009 Wentworth Park Games Day will be held on Sunday 27 September.

Glebe Community Garden
Coming from all walks of life, the Glebe Community Gardeners share an interest in sustainable living, cherish open space and city parks, follow organic and biodynamic principles and most of all - don’t mind getting their hands dirty! The Gardens consist of 25 individual plots, with common garden beds and a sunny, grassy lawn on the beautiful grounds of the Mind & Body Centre in Glebe. Pesticides and herbicides are not used, crops are fed from their compost bin and everything is watered from their rainwater tank. They meet every second Saturday of the month at 11am for a working bee, and on certain other days.

Glebe Assistance and Partnership Program (GAPP)
GAPP is an initiative by St Johns Church for people in the local neighbourhood who find themselves short of resources. They offer commitment, time, some expertise and some emergency relief funding. People who come to GAPP will be offered basic assistance with the opportunity to form an ongoing partnership with one of their volunteers.
